Under the leadership of Director Susana Diaz-Lopez, the Akins Mariachi Program has undergone remarkable growth and transformation. Since establishing Mariachi as a formal elective in 2021, Ms. Diaz-Lopez has evolved the group from a small after-school activity into a high-demand, award-winning ensemble that fosters cultural pride and academic discipline. Unlike other programs, Mariachi uniquely integrates strings, brass, and vocals, offering students—particularly those of Mexican heritage—a powerful connection to their roots. Maintaining this excellence comes with significant costs; a single authentic uniform is approximately $800, and professional instruments, including guitarróns and vihuelas, start at $600. Your support ensures these talented musicians can continue to represent our community at competitive festivals and local events while preserving this vital educational tradition.
